🤠 Who’s in Your Posse?

Ever feel like you’re juggling everything? 🤹‍♀️

🔴 Work
🟠 Family
🟢 Health
🔵 Friendships

The everyday things that keep life moving.

And somehow, the urgent things have a way of getting most of our attention.

But some of what matters most—our faith, our relationships, our health—doesn’t always make the most noise. It still needs tending.

We can become so busy managing life—even meeting the needs of the people we love—that we miss opportunities to be present with them.

And we can keep putting off connection, assuming there will be more time when things finally settle down.

But relationships need tending along the way.

The older I get, the more I’m learning to examine how I’m actually living—and what needs my care, including the people in my life.

If you tend to move fast—always thinking ahead, trying to be efficient, checking things off a list—I’m right there with you. 🙋‍♀️

It’s easy to miss opportunities to notice and connect with the people right in front of us.

I’m learning to slow down and give relationships the attention they deserve. If you’re learning that too, let’s walk through this together.

I talk about “getting your POSSE” quite a bit, but I’ve never walked through the different people who make up a POSSE.

Here’s what I mean:

Your POSSE is made up of the people woven into the fabric of your life—from your closest relationships to the people you connect with occasionally. Some share your ordinary days and defining moments. Others offer a fresh perspective, encouragement, or wisdom along the way. Together, these connections help you grow, flourish, and faithfully steward your life and assignment—and give you opportunities to do the same for others.

When I think about a healthy POSSE, I consider two main categories:

─── ✦ ───
CATEGORY 1: GROWTH STAGE
─── ✦ ───

🌱 People at different places on the road

⬆️ Mentors — People ahead of us in a particular area who we can learn from.
↔️ Amigos — People walking beside us, sharing the journey.
⬇️ Mentees — People we can help take their next steps with what we’ve learned, experienced, or been given.

These roles can shift. Someone may mentor you in one area, walk beside you in another, and learn from you somewhere else.

─── ✦ ───
CATEGORY 2: PERSONALITY & STRENGTHS
─── ✦ ───

🎭 The different gifts people bring

I like to think of these as:

🤲 Grace — The encourager who brings compassion, patience, and reassurance.
🗣️ Frank — The truth-teller who loves us enough to say what we need to hear.
😂 Wit — The joy-bringer who helps us laugh and makes the journey lighter.

These aren’t fixed boxes. One person can bring all three—and we can grow in offering each of them, too.

You don’t need one person to be everything. Different people bring different gifts.

Over the next several posts, we’ll explore these relationships through stories and practical suggestions for welcoming people into your life—or tending the relationships you already have.

As you read, consider:

→ Who’s already in your life? You may have more of a POSSE than you realize.

→ Which relationships need tending? A call, an invitation, or more consistent follow-through might be a place to start.

→ What’s missing? Where might you need to be intentional about building a new connection?

→ What capacity do you have? What kind of connection can you make room for in this season?

→ What can you offer? Where might you be an encourager, a trusted voice, or a companion for someone else?

You don’t have to build or strengthen it all at once. Start by noticing who’s already there. Appreciate them. Take one step toward connection.

In the next post, we’ll explore some basic building blocks of connection: being nice, friendly, and welcoming—how they’re different and what each looks like in practice.

Because alongside asking “Who’s in my POSSE?” we can also ask:

“How am I making room for them?”
